The McCracken County Sheriff's Department is sharing details of another IRS scam.

A Sheriff's Deputy received a call from 707-501-9891 on Thursday morning, informing him of a legal problem and saying he "would be taken into custody by the local cops." He was asked to call back to discuss the issued in greater detail. When the deputy called, the person who answered said he was from the IRS and said a warrant had been issued for tax evasion. When the deputy identified himself, the scammer persisted and scolded him for not paying his taxes. After more questions from the deputy, the person hung up.

The Sheriff's Department says they get several calls every week from people saying someone has tried to scam them, and some of those people even impersonate law enforcement officers or call their office phones. Deputies remind everyone that these types of "scare tactic" calls demanding gift cards as payment to avoid arrest are scams. Anyone who receives one of these calls should not provide information or give in to their demands. Instead potential victims should notify law enforcement.
