Tonight from 5 - 9, Jefferson Street will be closed between 19th and 25th Streets. This is a popular neighborhood for Halloween trick-or-treaters with more than 2000 people expected. After contacting the Jefferson Street Neighborhood Association, the City of Paducah will close the street for the safety of the pedestrians.

The Paducah Police Department recommends that general trick-or-treating in neighborhoods throughout the City be held between 5 and 9 tonight.  Paducah Police Chief Brandon Barnhill says, “We want everyone to have a safe, fun evening.  I recommend that parents, guardians, and trick-or-treaters carry flashlights and wear a reflective band or garment to increase visibility when crossing streets.”

Here are some tips for having a safe night of trick-or-treating:

* Make sure to trick-or-treat with a trusted adult
* Wear comfortable shoes
* Select costumes that fit appropriately and are not tripping hazards
* Make sure that costume swords, knives, and similar accessories are short, soft, and flexible;
* Take masks off while walking to the next house
* Avoid walking in the road; walk on sidewalks or the edge of yards
* Put electronic devices down while walking to the next house
* Select houses with their front porch lights on in familiar neighborhoods
* Don’t go inside any house or accept a ride from a stranger
* Don’t pet or approach any animals
* Have an adult check the candy before eating it. Candy should be discarded if the wrapper is faded or torn if the candy is unwrapped.

For those who will be driving Halloween evening, please reduce your speed in residential neighborhoods and watch for children at intersections, on medians, and at the edge of yards. Use extra caution when entering and exiting driveways.

According to Chapter 66 Section 196 of the City of Paducah Code of Ordinances, the curfew for minors (less than 18 years of age) is 1 am Saturday.
