An Illinois woman is facing DUI and criminal mischief charges after she reportedly crashed into a pole on New Year's morning, causing a power outage in a Paducah neighborhood.

According to the Paducah Police Department, officers arrived at the 1200 block of North 8th Street about 2:20 am Wednesday. They spoke to the driver of a minivan, 20-year-old Margaret Alcantra of Brookport, who said she swerved to miss a possum and hit the utility pole instead.

Police say Alcantra smelled strongly of alcohol and failed several field sobriety tests.

She was arrested and taken to the McCracken County Regional Jail, charged with driving under the influence (under 21), and second-degree criminal mischief.
