Paducah police are warning the public about a scam reported Wednesday by a Facebook user.

According to police, the man reporting the scam said he received a message from a friend on Facebook, telling him about money available to him through the “Federal Govt & Private Grants Poverty Eradication Foundation.”

The man contacted the “grants” organization, which informed him the organization is connected to unclaimed lottery monies. However, to get your money, the organization says, you have to pay the “case file and IRS tax” fees, which increase with the amount of money you want to receive. (i.e. A $1,500 payment will get you $100,000 in grants; a $10,000 payment will get you $1 million in grants.)

Police said the man reporting the scam has tried to contact his Facebook friend to let him know that his account obviously has been hacked.

Paducah Police are reminding Facebook users to be aware that messages of this type are scams, and to delete such messages immediately.
