Paducah Police Swear In 6-Year-Old
By West Kentucky Star Staff
PADUCAH - The Paducah Police Department swore in its newest officer Wednesday afternoon. It was the first officer to wear a big yellow hair bow.

Six-year-old Ariel Barton has always wanted to be a police officer, and officers had the honor of making her wish come true for one day.

Ariel was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in June of 2016 when she was only three.  She underwent chemotherapy treatment once a week for a year at Vanderbilt Children's Hospital in Nashville, and still receives maintenance chemotherapy once a week.

Ariel was sworn in with a special oath - promising to mind her mother, do her best in school, be kind and share her toys, and to help her fellow officers by reporting bubblegum thieves.

She signed her oath as regular officers do, then partnered with officers to fight crime and eat frozen custard at Culver's.
