A Paducah man was seriously injured Sunday evening when police say he walked into the path of an oncoming car.

The Paducah Police Department says 41-year-old Christopher White told officers he was driving east on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and began slowing for a red light at North 13th Street. White said he sped back up when the light changed to green, and as he was passing the Community Kitchen, he caught a glimpse of something entering the roadway. His car then struck 68-year-old Martin Cornwell of Paducah.

Cornwell was taken to Baptist Health Paducah with serious injuries, and was later airlifted to a Nashville hospital. White was not hurt.

Police said two witnesses confirmed White’s account of the incident. The department's Collision Reconstruction Team was called to investigate the crash.
