A child was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon after being hit by a vehicle while he was crossing the road.

According to the McCracken County Sheriff's office, at around 4:05 pm deputies responded to the 5500 block of Husband Road to a report of a boy that had been hit by a car shortly after getting off a school bus. Police said 18-year-old Courtney Woods of Hickory struck 11-year-old Zachary Pittman of Paducah when he was attempting to cross the road. Woods was reportedly unable to stop in time to avoid hitting Pittman as he crossed.

Police said the school bus Pitmann was riding on was not involved in the incident, and had already left the scene when he was hit.

Pittman was taken to Lourdes ER, and was later flown to Kosair Children's Hospital for treatment of multiple injuries.

Deputies say the incident is still under investigation.
