United States Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao announced Monday a $700,570 grant to support capital improvements at Paducah Barge, LLC, a local provider of barge transportation services on inland waterways.

Provided through Maritime Administration's Small Shipyard Grant Program, the funding supports employee training and related improvements, including plans at Paducah Barge for acquisition and construction of a new dry dock which will enable the yard to begin hauling barges for vessel repairs.

"These grants help create jobs in America's small shipyards, which play a significant role in our country's maritime sector," Secretary Chao said.

"Small shipyards are an irreplaceable aspect of America's shipbuilding industry," Maritime Administrator Mark Buzby said. "They are a key component to national security and our economic viability as a whole, providing good jobs for hardworking Americans."
