Deputy Cory Golightly has been on on paid administrative leave since May 2, when a .38 caliber revolver he was carrying accidentally discharged at a wedding he was attending in Carlisle County. The round hit his mother Debbie Golightly in the abdomen. She is recovering from surgery related to her gunshot wound.
In a Monday news release, Sheriff Jon Hayden said Golightly's employment has been terminated.
This was not Golightly's first accidental shooting. In April, 2010 Golightly lost control of his service weapon and shot a fellow deputy in the foot at the scene of an arrest.
Here is Sheriff Hayden's public statement regarding Golightly's termination:
On May 2 it was reported that an off-duty McCracken Deputy Sheriff had an accidental weapon discharge in Bardwell, Ky. The bullet had struck a relative causing the relative to be hospitalized. The deputy was placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation into the matter.
On Friday May 08, 2015, a preliminary report was provided by the Carlisle County Sheriff’s Office to this agency for review. Information from that report, as well as statements from Deputy Golightly were considered as part of the investigation.
On Monday May 11, 2015, the deputy’s employment was terminated due to departmental policy infractions, including the departmental policy on the use and handling of weapons.
On April 16, 2010, Dep. Golightly had a previous unintentional discharge of his weapon. That shot struck another McCracken Deputy in the foot.
