The case of a Paducah woman charged with criminal abuse is set to go to a grand jury.

According to the McCracken County Circuit Court Clerk, 31-year-old Jennifer Smith has waived her right to a preliminary hearing.

Smith was arrested March 30 and charged with 1st degree criminal abuse. The McCracken County Sheriff's Department says Smith's 6-year-old child received injuries that required hospitalization. The investigation revealed that there were old and new injuries, indicating that abuse could have been happening for an extended period of time.

Deputies said she denied any abuse, but she was unable to give reasonable explanations for her child's injuries, which physicians described as severe.

Smith's arraignment is set for May 17.
