A homeless man was arrested over the weekend after officers responded to an alarm at a local pharmacy.

The Paducah Police Department says two officers were sent to G&O Pharmacy on Broadway when an alarm sounded just before 11 am Sunday. One officer says he saw a man run out the back door, jump into a truck and drive away, almost striking the other officer's cruiser as he approached the area.

The truck was stopped a few blocks away and the driver, 57-year-old James G. Prentice, was arrested. He told police officers he is homeless.

Police say they saw Prentice drinking something as they approached the truck, and a detective found an empty bottle of cough syrup in the floorboard.

Prentice was charged with burglary, fleeing or evading police, wanton endangerment, tampering with evidence and driving without a license. He was booked into McCracken County Jail.
