Authorities have arrested a man for breaking into a grocery store and stealing cash and other items.

The McCracken County Sheriff's Department says deputies responded shortly after 1 a.m. to a burglary alarm at the Reidland Food Giant. When the deputy arrived, he saw a man wearing a ski mask loading items and merchandise into a black trash bag from the store's front window.

The suspect, later identified as 52-year-old Richard Stockton Jr. fled towards the back of the grocery store. The deputy caught Stockton and apprehended him after a struggle in the snow.

Deputies said Stockton had a crow bar and hammers, both of which he used to get into the building and to break into an ATM. Stockton had $1,000 that had been stolen from the store, as well as power tools, cartons of cigarettes, and other items.

Stockton was on supervised released for felony charges in Christian County at the time of his arrest. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries he suffered during the struggle with the deputy, as well as an unrelated health condition. He's charged with 3rd degree burglary, theft, 1st degree criminal mischief, fleeing or evading police, resisting arrest, and possession of burglary tools.
