Third District State Representative Gerald Watkins has announced he won't be seeking re-election.

“After much thought, prayer, and discussion, I have decided not to seek reelection to the Kentucky State House of Representatives,” Watkins said.

After first getting elected in 2012, Watkins, a Democrat, is currently serving his third term.

“It has been a great honor to serve the people of Paducah and McCracken County,” said Watkins. “I have enjoyed the privilege but I am tired of driving four hours each way to Frankfort, sleeping in a hotel three months of each year and I have not had a vacation in seven years.  My daughter recently married a U.S. Marine and he is stationed at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.  I would like to go visit  my daughter and son-in-law. “

Watkins said he wanted to announce early so everyone who is interested has plenty of time to prepare to run next year.

“Again, it has been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve in the Kentucky House,” Watkins said. “I appreciate the opportunity.”
