The City of Paducah hosted its first of three public meetings Monday night to discuss a comprehensive storm water drainage plan for the city.

City officials along with the consulting firm Strand Associates hosted the meeting at the Robert Cherry Civic Center. Strand's Senior Planning Advisor John Lyons gave a presentation to show residents what steps are involved in the storm water plan.

"The engineers assigned to this project are not here to eliminate flooding. That's an impossible task," Lyons said. He said the goal is to reduce the flooding and its effects on property.

Lyons said the main goal of Monday's meeting was to collect information from the public, and to share the first steps in the plan. He listed a few possible solutions, including retention ponds and pump stations, among others.

"We always open to creative solutions." Lyons said.

During the summer of 2016,  the city requested qualifications from interested firms, and received six submissions. City Engineer Rick Murphy, Storm Water and Drainage Engineer Eric Hickman, Joint Sewer Agency Executive Director John Hodges and Paducah Economic Development President Scott Darnell worked as a selection committee to score each submission, view presentations from firms, and make a recommendation. They unanimously chose Strand Associates, which has been in business since 1946 and has two offices in Kentucky.

If you were unable to attend the meeting, there is still time send information. You can send photos of flooding to stormwateranddrainage@paducah.ky.gov. Please include dates of the flooding. A questionnaire can also be completed at the link below.

Two other public meetings will be held at later dates.
