A father and daughter facing multiple counts of animal cruelty were in court on Tuesday and have been offered a deal by prosecutors.

According to Craig Newbern with the McCracken County Attorney's office, Harold and Jennifer Campbell appeared before Judge Todd Jones in McCracken District Court, where they each face 51 counts of 2nd degree cruelty to animals and two counts of contempt of court.

They had failed to appear in court twice before, but were eventually arrested in Illinois and extradited to McCracken County.

Newbern said the plea deal offered to the Campbells would probate their sentence for 24 months after they serve 45 days in jail.

Newbern said, "They would be on probation for a period of two years, and that's because this is a misdemeanor. By law, you cannot be on probation for a misdemeanor more than two years."

If they accept the deal, Harold and Jennifer Campbell would agree to have no pets or criminal problems during the probation period, and would forfeit ownership of all animals seized at their home in October.

They were charged after a search of the home led to discovery of more than 50 Chihuahuas in poor living conditions. Some of the animals died.

The Campbells have not responded to the offer, but have a continued first appearance scheduled for February 11. They are still lodged in McCracken County Jail.
