Paducah residents have the opportunity to learn more about local government during a free program beginning in March.

At  Tuesday's city commission meeting, Assistant to the City Manager Michelle Smolen announced the launch of the Paducah Citizens’ Academy. The Academy will offer an in-depth look at how government works through an interactive program held on eight Thursday evenings 6:30 to 9 p.m. beginning March 23 through May 18. The Academy will not meet April 6 which is the week of spring break for local schools. A graduation ceremony will be at the May 23 meeting of the Paducah Board of Commissioners. The program is free to participants; however, class size is limited. Individuals 16 years of age and older who live, work, or attend school in Paducah-McCracken County are encouraged to apply.

Smolen said, “It’s really important to us that this program is interactive.  We really want to promote opportunities for two-way conversations and have face-to-face discussions with the staff and participants.”

Topics will include form and function of government, public safety, geographic information systems (GIS), planning and community development, finance and budget, engineering and public works, and parks services. There will be opportunities for ride-alongs, site visits, and tours. The program will include ridealongs with Public Safety, and tours of governmental facilities.  Anyone age 16 or older may participate. The goal is to offer the Paducah Citizen's Academy every spring.

The program is free to participants, but space is limited. Anyone age 16 or older is invited to participate. You can find additional information on the city's website, linked below.
