Paducah city leaders have approved a budget, and expect revenue to rise in the coming year.

On Tuesday, the Paducah Board of Commissioners approved an ordinance for the Fiscal Year 2018 city budget. The city is projecting a 2.7 percent increase in revenue for the upcoming year, with total general fund revenue projected at $34.4 million.

Nearly half of the $918,000 increase is forecast to come from payroll taxes. Other revenue sources include property tax and business license tax collections, and an insurance premium tax.

Projects to be funded this upcoming fiscal year, which runs from July 1 through June 30, include the first phase of the City Hall renovation project, the first phase of the E911 equipment replacement project, and renovation of the Noble Park tennis courts.

Commissioner Sarah Holland asked about the progress of the the possibility of creating a new communications position. Holland had first brought the idea to the table during a budget workshop. City Manager Jeff Pederson said, "I will have something to you by August." He said that he had been researching communications positions in other cities.

Pederson also noted that Mayor Brandi Harless intends to meet with the commissioners when she returns from a UNESCO conference.
