The Paducah Board of Commissioners introduced an ordinance to clarify language concerning taxicabs.

The code change includes stricter requirements for an individual to be granted a taxicab driver’s license by the city. Chief of Police Brandon Barnhill said the application process needed the most work.

"We were getting applications from individuals that, quite frankly, did not need to be driving a taxicab. However, the old form of ordinance did not allow for much restriction outside of a felony," Barnhill said.

The new ordinance would require additional certifications regarding mental health if needed.

The amendments would also prevent someone convicted of a sex crime or a Class A or Class B felony from obtaining a taxicab driver’s license. The amendment updates the inspection process as well as the process for seizure or suspension of taxicab driver’s licenses and inspection stickers.

There also is language related to the conduct of taxicab drivers.

Another wording change makes it clear that city ordinances do not govern ride-share vehicles, such as Uber or Lyft. According to the amended ordinance, such companies are not under city government, and are permitted to operate in Paducah.

The final vote to amend Chapter 122 of city codes is scheduled for February 28.

A public hearing was also held concerning the sale of  several Falconite properties to Allied Community Services. See  link to watch hearing.
