Police are warning local residents to beware of a phone scam in which the caller attempts to get bank account info from the victim.

On Friday, the McCracken County Sheriff’s Department received information from a county resident saying they had fallen victim to an attempted scam. Police said the victim told them the caller had a “foreign accent” and told them due to their payment history on their credit card they were now eligible for a reduced interest rate.

The scammer then reportedly asked for the victim to “confirm” their credit card number, followed by requesting their bank account number. When the victim refused to provide their bank account information, police said the caller remained persistent and tried to convince the victim that the number is “printed on their checks”, attempting to minimize the importance or need to keep the number confidential.

Police said the victim told them the call was made from 516-333-3803. However, it is common for these scammers to rotate numbers they call from, therefore should anyone receive a call with a similar theme, it may or may not come from the number that was previously used.
