CASA of McCracken County is recruiting for an upcoming free training class, and invite anyone interested in serving children to apply.

CASA -- Court Appointed Special Advocate -- volunteers are appointed by judges to watch over and advocate for abused and neglected children with cases in family court.

CASA volunteers served about 20 percent of the more than 300 local children whose cases were in family court last year in McCracken County. CASA volunteers stay with their cases until they are closed and each child is placed in a safe, permanent home.

CASA volunteers are managed by the Child Watch Counseling  & Advocacy Center.

A written application form, personal interview, and criminal background check are required. Applications for the upcoming class will be accepted through September 10th, with orientation planned for Monday, September 21, at 6:00 pm, followed by two classes each week for six weeks. The 30-hour training program is an in-depth, interactive curriculum designed by the National CASA Association and is required prior to service.

Upon completion of the training, participants will be certified Court Appointed Special Advocates who work as volunteers for McCracken County Family Court. Once training is complete, an average of three hours per week is expected from each volunteer. The orientation meeting and classes will be held at the Child Watch offices in Paducah.

Contact Liz Hansen at 270-443-1440 or lhansen@childwatchcac.org for more information, or to request an application.
