Former Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear was in Paducah Monday to sign copies of his new book, People Over Politics, and have a cup of coffee with area residents.

Beshear authored the book with former journalist Dan Hassert. Hassert served as Beshear's Speech writer during his terms in office.

In an interview with West Kentucky Star, Beshear said his Book talks about issues that his administration dealt with during his eight years in office. He said the main theme of the book is how to make government work again. "I think most people would agree that government is broken right now, particularly in Washington D.C.," Beshear said.

Beshear said the message in the book is government does not have to be broken. He gave an example from during his tenure, when there was a democratic house and a Republican senate. "I was able to get every one of them, for the most part, to remember that we're all Kentuckians first and democrats and republicans second," Beshear said. He said that is the message he wants to send across the commonwealth and the country.

Beshear noted an excerpt from the book where he talked about bipartisan successes while in office. He talked about how drug abuse in Kentucky is a problem, and how in 2012 he got the then Republican Senate Majority leader to go along with him on drug abuse legislation. Beshear said the fight was tough, and the senate leader went against several in his own party. However, the legislation was passed.

Beshear said he used the example to show how democrats and republicans can come together on an idea. "You do the peoples' work and politics takes care of itself." He said.

People Over Politics is available from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and in local book stores.
