A previously unnamed teacher mentioned in an ongoing sex abuse investigation at McCracken County High School has been formally charged.

On February 6, detectives with the McCracken County Sheriff’s Office began investigating alleged inappropriate communications between McCracken County High School teacher Daniel Edwards and a student. During the investigation, detectives say that Edwards also had inappropriate communications with another student in June or July of 2018, when he asked them to send him a naked photograph of themselves. The former student stated they had not had any recent communications with Edwards and their only previous relationship was student/teacher and athlete/coach.

Detectives consulted with the county attorney’s office and took out a charge against Edwards for harassing communications, a class B misdemeanor. He was served with a criminal summons on Friday and detectives seized evidence from him.

Friday afternoon, McCracken County School Superintendent Brian Harper was informed of the charges against Edwards so the school district could begin their internal investigation. The sheriff's department requested that Harper delay his investigation so the criminal investigation would not be compromised.

Edwards was mentioned during a press conference on Wednesday but his name was not released.

This investigation is ongoing.

Sheriff Matt Carter also released information regarding rumors of alleged sexual incidents in the high school library. Carter said school resource officers notified his department when they were made aware in late 2018. The investigation determined that a student video was created to make it appear as though a sexual act was taking place, but no sexual act occured. After consultations with school officials changes were made in the layout of the library so that students could not easily conceal themselves.

Carter clarified that all of these incidents took place while Michael Ceglinski was principal and should not reflect upon interim princlipal, Ginger Stewart.
