The McCracken County Sheriff’s Office is again warning residents of an old scam that is once again making its way across the area.
The McCracken County Sheriff’s Office has fielded multiple reports over recent days regarding individuals representing themselves as members of local law enforcement, claiming the victim has a warrant for their arrest for missing jury duty.
The scammers will often utilize computer or cellular applications that make the call appears as originating from the actual phone number of a local law enforcement agency. The scammers will then direct the victim to make a payment to avoid arrest, either using prepaid credit cards or by depositing monies into a crypto currency account.
The scammers will often require the victim to stay on the phone with them during the call and direct the victim not to speak to anyone about what the phone call is about.
The McCracken County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public that law enforcement agencies will not contact individuals by phone, nor will law enforcement solicit payment via phone.
