An Illinois woman is facing over 100 counts of inhumane treatment of animals in McCracken County.
The McCracken County Sheriff’s Office began investigating an alleged “puppy mill” on Friday as they said they were notified that there was a large number of dogs at the closed Reidland Veterinary Clinic. Once deputies arrived, they were able to verify that a large number of dogs were present and that they appeared to be living in less than ideal conditions.
They searched the buidling after obtaining a search warrant and said they found 124 dogs. Deputies said the majority of the building had no ventilation, no electricity, and no heating or air. Most of the dogs were on carpet and congregating in feces and urine.
Detectives learned an Illinois woman, 66-year-old Suzanne Alt of Woodlawn, was renting the building. They spoke with Alt, and discovered she had been under investigation in Illinois related to these same dogs. Alt was cited to court for 111 counts of inhumane treatment of animals.
A special animal cruelty investigator at the McCracken County Sheriff's Office is continuing to investigate with the help of McCracken County Animal Control.
