Two Paducah high school students have been named semifinalists in the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Program. Meg Hancock, a senior at Paducah Tilghman High School, and Caleigh Propes, a senior at McCracken County High School, are among 2,200 high school seniors nationwide selected from a pool of 87,060 applicants to advance in the scholarship program based on academic excellence, leadership, and service to the community.

Hancock is a National Merit Semifinalist, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and is currently tied for first in her class at Tilghman. She is a Kentucky Governor’s Scholar, a National Speech and Debate Association Academic All American, and holds state championship titles in Kentucky History Day, argumentative writing, and speech writing. She is co-founder of the Tilghman Tellers Storytelling Troupe and organized and moderated the 2014 candidates’ forum at Tilghman. She has volunteered and taught for six years at Paducah’s Reading Camp, a program where literacy is fostered among local elementary students. She interns on the Paducah Human Rights Commission and is a member of Grace Episcopal Church.

Propes is a National Merit Commended Student, an AP Scholar with Distinction, and is currently first in her class at McCracken County. She is a Kentucky Governor’s Scholar, a Junior Rotarian, and was chosen as an International Representative for the Kentucky Future Problem Solving Affiliate. She helped earn a national championship designation with the McCracken County coed cheer team, and she has won state, national, and international honors with the Future Business Leaders of America and the Future Problem Solving Program. She created and coaches her own Future Problem Solving team at Heath Elementary School, where she volunteers weekly. She is a member of Spring Bayou Baptist Church.             Both Hancock and Propes are student teachers at Score Higher ACT Prep in Paducah.

“Caleigh is one of the most talented students I have ever been around,” said McCracken County High School Principal Michael Ceglinski. “You can find her accomplishments throughout McCracken County High School. She has one of the brightest minds I’ve ever seen and has an even bigger heart. Caleigh is a leader in every sense of the word and is so deserving of this scholarship opportunity. Her future has no limits and I am excited to see what impact she has on society some day.”

Paducah Public Schools Superintendent Donald Shively said of Hancock, “Meg is an outstanding example of Tilghman’s long standing tradition of exceptional scholars. Her true love of learning has allowed her to excel on a national level in all areas as a student. However, her focus on giving back to the community is what has left an impression on me. She has a passion for impacting Paducah in a positive way.”

The Coca-Cola Scholars Program was founded in 1989 to honor students who exhibit academic excellence, positive leadership, and dedication to service. The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation invests over $3,500,000 each year in deserving students who aspire to make profound differences in the world.
