Students Enter Veterans Day Poster-Essay Contest

The theme of this year’s contest is “Defending Freedom-Protecting Dreams.”  Judging will be in four divisions:  grades K-2 (8” x 11” picture), grades 3-5 (100-150 word essay), grades 6-8 (150-200 word essay), and grades 9-12 (200-300 word essay). Paducah Parks Services and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) are hosting the annual Veterans Day Poster and Essay Contest.  The contest is for all K-12 students in Paducah and McCracken County.  

First, second, and third place winners will be selected from each grade division.  First place winners will receive a ribbon and $100 from the City of Paducah.  Second place winners will receive a ribbon and $50 from the City of Paducah.  Each third place winner will receive a ribbon and a historical-themed book. 

Winners will be invited to present their picture or read their essay at the Veterans Day Parade opening ceremony at 10:30 am on November 11 at the downtown gazebo.  The winners also are invited to ride on a float in the parade. 

The following must be on the back of each entry:  student’s name, grade, name of school and teacher, and the school’s phone number or email address.  The deadline to submit entries is Wednesday, October 22 by 5 pm. 

Entries can be hand-delivered to the Parks Department office at 1400 H.C. Mathis Drive or mailed to the following address: Veterans Day Essay Contest P.O. Box 7265 Paducah, KY  42002-7265.
