Graves County High School’s 1,362 students turned numerous parts of Mayfield and the entire county into their classroom Monday, May 18, for the school’s sixth annual Community Service day. Community service has been a graduation requirement for several years throughout Kentucky and other states. GCHS inaugurated its first-ever Community Service Day in 2010.

Each spring since, the entire student body has pursued projects on the same day to paint, clean, repair, wash cars, raise funds for charity, and more. Students continue to contribute additional community service hours at other times throughout the year.

Still, the school-wide project each spring garners a large number of requests for help from individuals – especially the elderly – and from non-profit organizations. In turn, those projects have earned the students a large number of compliments, thank you notes, and other accolades for their kindness, hard work, and the good jobs they’ve done.

Teacher Jennifer Hunter serves as coordinator this year. She thanked all those who helped, including the entire faculty and staff of GCHS and the school district’s transportation department.
