One Book Photo Exhibit to Open in Clemens Gallery
By WestKyStar & WKCTC Staff
PADUCAH, KY - New York Times best-selling author Karen Thompson Walker will visit West Kentucky Community and Technical College March 13-14 as the finale to the college's 10th anniversary One Book Read.

Walker will deliver a public presentation on March 13 at 7 pm and a student presentation on March 14 at 11 am. Both presentations, which are free and open to the public, will be held in the college's Clemens Fine Arts Center.

"We are thrilled to have Karen on campus with us as the culmination of our One Book Read and to help us celebrate 10 years of this project," said Amy Sullivan, WKCTC One Book Read co-chair. Over the past decade, we've had many distinguished authors be a part of the Read, which has allowed us to reach literally thousands of people of all ages. We are so proud to continue our mission of promoting the importance of reading and helping to eliminate illiteracy in our region."

The Age of Miracles details the rotation of the Earth that has begun to slow making the days and nights grow longer and longer, disrupting everyone and everything. Gravity is affected; the birds, the tides, human behavior, and cosmic rhythms are thrown into disarray. Crops begin to fail, the oceans rise, food and water are hoarded, and there is talk about the end of the world with the possibility of having to relocate to another planet.

The story revolves around 11-year-old Julia, who on top of the catastrophic events that take place with the "slowing," has to also deal with her own personal world-divisions widening between her parents, strange behavior by her friends, the pain and vulnerability of first love, a growing sense of isolation, and a surprising, rebellious new strength she finds through it all.

An opening reception for WKCTC's Paducah School of Art and Design exhibition of the One Book Read communitywide photo contest will take place this Thursday, March 8 at 5 pm in the Clemens Fine Arts Center Gallery. Light refreshments will be served.

The exhibition will remain open in the gallery through March 23, with the contest winners being announced during a reception for Walker in the college's Student Center March 13 at 6 pm prior to the 7 pm presentation. The reception is free and the public is invited to attend.
