The spring Nonprofit Connections event brought more than 50 nonprofit organizations together at Murray State University on Feb. 6.

The event informed attendees about possible community service opportunities and employment prospects for the coming year.

A few of the organizations represented at Nonprofit Connections included the American Red Cross, the Murray-Calloway County Humane Society, the Gentry House, Soup for the Soul and the Kentucky Commission on Community Volunteerism and Service.

Later in the day, a representative from the national office of the Student Conservation Association held a presentation in the Curris Center for interested students.

One of the primary purposes of Nonprofit Connections is to foster connections between nonprofit organizations, student groups, residential colleges, Greek life and individuals so they may work together to meet real needs in the community. Junior and senior students from Calloway County High School were also in attendance at Tuesday’s event.

“Each semester, the event serves as western Kentucky's opportunity for nonprofit leaders to gather in one location to network, share ideas, develop partnerships and work together on important causes,” said Dr. Kelly Rogers, co-organizer of the event and associate professor at Murray State.

Nonprofit Connections is made possible by participating organizations and the College of Education and Human Services at Murray State. Rogers and Robin Esau, both faculty in the College’s nonprofit leadership studies program, took the lead in organizing the event. Special thanks is also due to Murray State’s Quality Enhancement Plan Initiative, which sponsored catering for participants and attendees.

“It’s never too early or too late in life to start making a difference in the local community and the world at large,” said Dr. David Whaley, dean of the College of Education and Human Services. “For that reason, Nonprofit Connections is a community-wide event open to attendees of all ages.”

“The SCA has amazing programs for teens and young adults that lead to rewarding careers,” Rogers said.
