The Graves County High School FFA chapter will compete by invitation in a career development event at the 92nd National FFA Convention and Expo in Indianapolis, Ind., Oct. 30-Nov. 2.

The chapter has competed at the competition’s highest levels in the past and recently received notification of the invitation to compete this year. The Graves County chapter will send members to vie for national honors in the area of poultry evaluation. Newly Weds Foods, Inc.; Tyson Foods, Inc.; and U.S. Poultry and Egg Association sponsor the event. FFA members who will represent the chapter include Ethan Story, Sarah Lyell, Gracey Moffitt, and Madison Brown. Richard Horn is the chapter advisor.

Poultry evaluation is one of 25 career/leadership development event areas, covering jobs skills ranging from communication to mechanics. Members evaluate production, processing and merchandising phases of the poultry industry and they identify various industry components. Testing extends to the application of sound management practices.

Participants evaluate live birds, present oral reasons and place a class of ready-to-cook broilers. In the processing and merchandising phase of the event, members select and grade ready-to-cook turkeys, processed products and cartons of eggs. Career and leadership development events help students develop the abilities to think critically, to communicate clearly and to perform effectively in a competitive job market.

The National FFA Organization provides leadership, personal growth and career success training through agricultural education to 669,989 student members, each of whom belongs to one of 8,630 local FFA chapters throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Some 459,514 alumni members in 2,236 alumni chapters throughout the U.S. also support the students, chapters, and their efforts.
