Paducah Middle educator Timothy Franklin has been named as the director of the Paducah Innovation Hub Makerspace for Paducah City Schools.

The Hub is replacing the Paducah Area Technical Center at Paducah Tilghman High School. The hub will offer programs like engineering, robotics, information technology, health science and art. The hub will also offer industrial maintenance curriculums for welding, carpentry, auto body and autotech.

As Makerspace Director, Franklin will manage and develop programs and services for K-12 students to encourage project-based learning, creative thinking, and the blending of art, academic disciplines, and career/technical education.

Franklin will continue at Paducah Middle for the remainder of this school year and will begin his duties July 1.

“We are excited to welcome Tim Franklin as Makerspace Director,” said Will Black, Assistant Superintendent.  “He not only brings a wealth of knowledge as a former engineer and science teacher, but he is also an expert at engaging students of all ages in creative, hands-on exploration and problem solving.  This is the heart of Makerspace—allowing students and adults opportunities to learn about science, art, design, and career and technical opportunities through hands-on activities.”

Franklin teaches math and science at Paducah Middle School, where he has developed and implemented project-based learning in the science curriculum and integrated computer science instruction.  He created a pilot class, “Introduction to Innovation” that used a project-based model to aid students in the creation, design, and execution of projects that meet needs in the community.

Franklin has been an educator since 2006. He taught middle school science in Marshall County for seven years. Prior to that, he taught high school and middle school science in Lyon County, where he was named Lyon County Teacher of the Year in 2010-11. This year Franklin was a Regional Educator Award nominee, a Murray State University “Going the Extra Yard” Educator award recipient, and a 3E Leadership Educator of the Month.

Franklin is credentialed as an OSHA compliance trainer, and has worked as an Industrial Hygienist/Consulting Engineer for business and industry in the region.

Franklin received his bachelor’s degree in Occupational Safety and Health Engineering and a master’s degree in Middle School Education from Murray State University. He received a master’s degree in ministry from Trinity Theological Seminary and has served churches in the region as a minister for over 20 years.
