Kentucky Commissioner of Education Stephen Pruitt has appointed Brandon Birney of LaCenter to fill the current vacancy in District 3 on the Ballard County Board of Education.

The appointment takes immediate effect upon Birney being duly sworn in at the Aug. 22 special called board meeting (moved from its original Aug. 28 date), and expires at the end of 2018. He replaces long-time member Haskell Sheeks, who resigned at the end of June.

Birney is a 1995 Ballard Memorial High School graduate, and holds a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from Murray State University (2000). He has been employed by Bandana Ag Inc. and Agro Tech Inc. since 2004, and previously worked with Precision Management and Consulting. Birney also has been involved recently with the Ballard Bullets, a non-profit junior athletic booster club formed to support little league athletics here in the county. He resides outside of LaCenter, with his wife, Kandice, and two children.

“I applied for this position to help ensure that our students have the opportunity to receive the education they need to be successful, whether that’s in college, the workplace, or the military,” Birney said. “I have a lot to learn about being on a board of education, so I’ll have to figure out where those opportunities are, and go from there. I believe that being involved with students in little league sports, having two children at Ballard County Elementary School, and working in the county will aid me in supporting the best decisions for our kids and our school district.”

Ballard Superintendent Casey Allen, said, “Mr. Birney will make a great addition to the board in finishing out the term of Mr. Sheeks. Brandon has a heart for working with and for Ballard County children, to make sure they have what they need to be successful citizens. We are proud to have him on the board, and are looking forward to moving our district forward.”

Allen continued, “The district thanks Mr. Sheeks for his years of tireless work for the children of Ballard County. He was both a dedicated teacher and administrator, and served many years on the Board of Education – including the last five as chair of the board. Over his entire career, Mr. Sheeks helped make Ballard County Schools a great place to learn.”
