Sponsored by Socially Present and KentuckyCare, the exhibition will feature documentary shorts, still images, visual graphics and time-lapse photography produced during Western Kentucky University’s Mountain Workshops, a photojournalism conference that takes place at a different Kentucky community every year since 1976. Participants spend an intense week learning visual storytelling from professionals while documenting Kentucky communities.
Jonas Neihoff of Socially Present says “We became a sponsor because mountains are cool and so are workshops, so we thought mountain workshops must be super cool,” but on a serious note, found the whole project an important contribution that captures and shares stories about Paducah, something he knows a thing or two about.
Last October, over 150 photojournalists from WKU’s School of Journalism and Broadcasting including faculty and staff and independent participants descended on Paducah to observe the life that thrives in this community. They documented many things ranging from a quilter to a barber, a biker church to the animation of Paducah’s rural life and what home life is like in Paducah.
Subjects include Nick Beeney, a senior at Paducah Tilghman High School, Dixie Lynn, a working mother and wife, Michael Taylor, barber and founder of Mikia’s Place, Robert Warden, President of Paducah Ambassadors, and Drew Vanderford, a volunteer tutor at Clark Elementary School.
Admission to "Mountain Workshops: photographs and video" exhibit is free of charge. The Opening Reception will begin with a Members' Preview hour from 5 - 6 pm and open to the public at 6 - 7 pm on Saturday, Feb. 25.
Located in downtown Paducah, the Yeiser Art Center is a non-profit visual arts organization celebrating more than fifty years of serving the community through exhibitions and education throughout the Tri-State Region.
