The fourth quarter artwork for the 2015 Mayor’s Art Club features artwork by L. Dwain Smith, Margie Cissell-Smith, and Harrietta Harper.  The public can view the artwork when City Hall is open, Monday through Friday, 8 am until 4:30 pm.

The artwork will be on display through the end of December.  In the Mayor’s reception area at City Hall, you can view more than a dozen acrylic paintings by Harrietta Harper.

Harrietta earned bachelor and master degrees in music from Murray State University.  She taught music in public schools until her retirement.  After retiring, Harrietta’s love of the fine arts led her to begin painting.  She has studied with renowned artists Clyde Lawter, Mel Garbark, Cleda Curtis, and Julia McKee.  Harrietta prefers to paint in a loose painterly style with lost edges and varying degrees of realism.  She is a member of the Paducah Area Painter’s Alliance (PAPA), the Mayfield-Graves County Art Guild, and the Yeiser Art Center.

Paintings by L. Dwain Smith and Margie Cissell-Smith are on display in the Mayor’s office at City Hall.  The couple operates out of a studio on North 5th Street, Molly Redhair Studio.  Margie, a native of Paducah, has studied art in Paris and is recognized as a local art historian.  Margie is a scrimshander, jewelry designer, and painter.  She pursues acrylic, watercolor, collage, and pencil in her two-dimensional work.  Dwain, a Marshall County native, has years of experience working with precious metals and hand forging the alloys into award-winning jewelry.  He also is a two-dimensional artist who enjoys creating horse race scenes using acrylics.  Both Margie and Dwain have works in private and corporate collections including the White House and the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.

The eight artists or art groups participating in the 2015 Mayor’s Art Club are as follows:  Paul Aho, 1st quarter Clients from NeuroRestorative, 1st quarter Kijsa Housman, 2nd quarter Dogwood Trail Art and Photography Contest Winners, 2nd quarter Juanita Gilliam, 3rd quarter Ashlea McMillan, 3rd quarter Margie Cissell-Smith and L. Dwain Smith, 4th quarter Harrietta Harper, 4th quarter

2013, Mayor Gayle Kaler decided to begin displaying local art at City Hall.  Each quarter of the calendar year, two artists or art groups have the opportunity to display their artwork in the Mayor’s office and reception area on the second floor of City Hall.  This is the third year for the Mayor’s Art Club.  For more information, visit the link below.
