A Benton teen is on his way to Hollywood, after advancing through the initial round of auditions for the popular American Idol TV show.

Carson Denfip is a junior at Marshall County High School, and has a passion and talent for music that earned him a spot on the long-running show that has made many musicians famous over the years. Carson said he and his mother Krystal braved sub-freezing temperatures for hours just to get a chance to make open auditions for the show in Louisville.

One of thousands who tried out for the show, Carson wowed the panel of celebrity judges, ultimately securing a coveted "Golden Ticket" that has him heading for Hollywood to compete against other talented musicians for the top spot.

Carson said it was a dream come true to be chosen by the judges. He recounted the excitement of the moment he found out he was Hollywood bound.

"After I got done singing, they had some feedback they gave me that unfortunately didn't get aired. I got a yes from Lionel Richie. I got a no from Katy Perry, who said I was too young and needed to develop a little bit more, and then I got a yes from Luke Bryan. Then at the same time they all kind of said 'You're going to Hollywood.', and at that time all of the people I brought with me ran into the audition room and kind of erupted." He said.

Carson says he's already met a lot of talented people in his experience so far with the show, adding that no matter what happens in the end, it's already been a great experience.

"It's very surreal," He said. "I've heard so much talent, and I've gotten in contact with so many new people that I really love. I've kind of used this opportunity for exposure and to advance my musical experience."

You can see if Carson's audition makes it onto the show on ABC Sunday and Monday at 7 p.m.
