Paducah Main Street Director Katie Axt says her organization partnered with Must Stitch Emporium to create a kind of quilt "scavenger hunt". During the event, attendees can visit participating downtown businesses to collect 35 different instructions to create each block of a quilt that commemorates 35 years of QuiltWeek.
"It's kind of this scavenger hunt where quilters who are coming to Paducah get to experience downtown, support local business, and also take a piece of Paducah home with them," Axt said. "When they patronize the business, they are able to collect each shop's unique block. There are 35 blocks, for the 35th anniversary of the quilt show. Then the quilters will be able to go to Must Stich and get the fabric for the quilt, and then go home and make it themselves."
Participating vendors and businesses will display a sign that reads "2019 Quilt Block Merchant Participant". Axt said some vendors will also be allowed to temporarily open up "pop up shops" in vacant downtown storefronts for the show.
Axt said crews have been busy getting ready for the show, cleaning up the downtown area. She added that local restaurants and shops will be offering special items only available during QuiltWeek.
"Last week we had our downtown spring spruce up, in which we cleaned up our planters and planted flowers so we're ready to go to welcome the quilters," Axt said. "Many of the shops have merchandise that's specific to quilting and Paducah and art, to celebrate our UNESCO designation. And then some of the restaurants are doing specific menus and promotions that are unique to quilting."
QuiltWeek runs 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. April 24-26, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 27.
