Hear How a Shoe Box Gift Impacted a Child's Life - Operation Christmas Child's "Through the Voices of Children" at Friendship Baptist Church

Operation Christmas Child, a ministry that provides shoe boxes of gifts to children worldwide, is hosting events at three area churches to spotlight the impact of the program, featuring a man who received a shoe box as a child.

Luis Gonzalez grew up in Panama, raised in a ghetto by a single mom in a small house with a dirt floor. He wanted to go to school, but couldn't because he had no supplies, so his mother encouraged him to pray for God to provide what he needed. He did.

The next day a friend invited Luis to a nearby church where he was handed an Operation Christmas Child shoe box. It was the first gift he had ever received. Inside, along with candy and action figures, were the school supplies he needed and a booklet called, "The Greatest Journey."

This event sparked changes in Luis and his mother, and you can hear the rest of the story when Luis, who is now an adult, visits the area.

"Through the Voices of Children," will be presented July 13 at the following locations:

10 am - First United Methodist Church, 214 South 8th Street, Mayfield
3 pm - Blood River Baptist Association Building, 47 Aurora Highway, Hardin
7 pm - Friendship Baptist Church, 146 South Friendship Road, Paducah

The event will also feature information about how Operation Christmas Child works, including how to pack a shoe box, crafts, information on, "The Greatest Journey," and opportunities to volunteer.
